DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS

An exciting new appointment has arisen for the post of Director of Communications for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth. The Diocese is seeking to appoint its first Director of Communications following a detailed Communications Review.

The Director will write the Diocese’s Communications Plan based on the recently agreed Communications Objective ofbringing people closer to Jesus Christ through His Church’ and lead and manage Diocesan Communications (externally and internally). Working throughout the Diocese this is a tremendous opportunity for a suitably experienced person to play a key role in shaping and delivering a culture of good communication and raising the profile of the Church and the Diocese to Church members and the wider public.

Reporting to the Head of Department for New Evangelisation, but working closely with the Bishop of Portsmouth, the successful applicant will demonstrate the following:

  • A track record of success leading a communications function
  • A strong communications (or journalistic) background with experience in dealing with media enquiries; a good range of contacts and experience/understanding of all media platforms
  • Strong experience in strategic planning and analytical thinking
  • Ability to address multiple concurrent operational imperatives and opportunities successfully
  • Motivational leadership, with success in managing and collaborating with a wide range of peers, colleagues, volunteers and team members, including virtual teams, often without formal authority; evidence of negotiation, influencing and diplomacy skills
  • Be a practising Roman Catholic in full communion with the Catholic Church and supportive of its teaching and authority

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth covers a diverse urban and rural area comprising Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, the Channel Isles and parts of Berkshire, Dorset and Oxfordshire.  With over 90 parishes and 70 schools it is a registered charity.

Hours: 35 hours per week with occasional work outside of these hours.

Salary scale: Expected starting salary: in the region of £60,000.

Location: St Edmund House, Bishop Crispian Way, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO1 3QA. You will be based in Portsmouth but your work will take place across the Diocese, with regular travel elsewhere in the UK and very occasionally overseas.
